Abstract
Associating polymers such as hydrophobized polymers show unique properties by self organization in water. Hydrophobized polysaccharides, for example, which are partly substituted by hydrophobes such as long alkyl groups or cholesterol, from nanoparticles by self-assembly in dilute aqueous solution. In semi-dilute region, the polymers from a hydrogel. The size and density of the nanoparticle or rheological properties of the hydrogel are controlled by changing the substitution degree of the hydrophobes and the hydrophobicity. Additives such as surfactants and cyclodextrins affect the association of the polymer. The nanoparticle of the hydrophobized polysaccharide binds various soluble proteins. The hydrophobized polymers also interact with other molecular assemblies such as monolayers, liposomes, oil-in-water emulsions and cells. Such nano-organized systems are utilized in biotechnology and medicine.
