Summary
Endocrine disruptors are chemicals that are considered to act like hormones when they enter into the body, even at a very small amount, and to influence the development of reproductive organs and sexual behaviors. When exposed to these chemicals within the uterine or during an early period of development, testicular atrophy may occur in males, and ovarian malformation in females. In extreme cases, sex reversal may also occur. About 70 kinds of chemicals, including polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) are suspected as endocrine disruptors. Some investigators have expressed the fear that these chemicals exert their influences beyond generations, unlike carcinogens which directly affect individuals exposed.
